Warner Bros. buys film library including stakes in the LEGO movies
The film studio Warner Bros. purchased a larger stake in the LEGO movies as the company bought out the RatPac Dune library of films.
For years, Warner Bros. and RatPac Dune had a distribution agreement, with Warner Bros. funding and releasing RatPac Dune films. As part of the deal, RatPac Dune co-financed almost every Warner film released aside from those in the Harry Potter franchise. Recently, RatPac Dune’s library came up for sale, with 76 films in which the production company owned a 15-25% share.
The slate included all three LEGO movies released so far – The LEGO Movie, The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO NINJAGO Movie. Deadline reports that Vine Alternative Investments had bid $290 to $300 million for the library – but Warner Bros. had the right to march whatever the best offer was, and exercised the right to do so.
According to the article, the sale was made not due to the scandal surrounding Brett Ratner, but as the financing deal has reached the normal point when investors would cash out.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will be released on February 8, 2019.
